Christian preacher Valentine put in a Roman prison for the faith and soon sentenced to death. Sitting in custody, Valentine fell in love with a blind girl, the daughter of a prison guard. Using his medical knowledge, he healed her blindness.

According to another version, the jailer's blind daughter she fell in love with Valentine. That as a priest, a celibate, he could not respond to her feelings, but in the night before (night against the Feb. 14) sent her a touching letter, signed "Your Valentine."
